1. History
The Middle East Technical University (METU) started its education on November 15, 1956, under the name Middle East High Technology Institute. Today, METU offers 43 undergraduate programs and has 5 faculties. It also has 107 graduate and 69 doctoral programs. Currently, with 1250 faculty members (Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors), 225 teachers, and 1350 research assistants, over 28,000 students are part of the METU community. Today, it is one of the top 5 universities in Turkey.
2. Ranking
Over time, METU has managed to be included in the top 500 universities in the world. It is ranked highly in some international rating lists. Additionally, it has a campus in Northern Cyprus, offering 15 undergraduate and 5 graduate programs. METU is a university with international prestige. As a result, more than 5% of the faculty members at each faculty are foreign professors. In order to become a professor at METU , it is mandatory to study abroad, which is why nearly all professors have received their education abroad. There are over 1,700 international students from 93 countries studying at METU. All engineering faculties have been evaluated and accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), a US-based accreditation body.
Campus Life at METU
METU is one of the most beautiful spots in Ankara and Turkey. The artificial forest and the Eymir Lake add to the beauty of METU. The campus spans 4500 hectares and includes 3043 hectares of forested area. METU offers every opportunity for students to live comfortably. With 19 dormitories, 1 shopping center, 1 large supermarket, 9 banks, 3 sports complexes, 2 football fields, 10 indoor football fields, 6 tennis courts, an Olympic swimming pool, and numerous social centers, it provides students with a wonderful student life. The university also offers alpine sports and skiing at Elmadağ and Uludağ in Bursa during the summer and winter seasons, respectively. The large Cultural Congress Center hosts various theater, concert, and art exhibitions throughout the year. Every year, students experience unforgettable moments at the International Spring Festival. METU is also famous for its student organizations. Students from different faculties gather in various hobby, entertainment, and social clubs to organize beautiful and interesting events. METU’s Technopark section provides special opportunities for students in research and development.
4. Advice for Applicants
METU is a university everyone dreams of attending, which makes the competition fierce. This competition leads to the best students being admitted to METU. Grading at METU follows the CURVE method, meaning it is based on the average of all students' scores. The final grades are evaluated according to a specific average, so you must perform better than the top students. Since METU is a technical university, subjects like mathematics, physics, and chemistry carry more weight. If you want to enter the engineering faculties and lack a solid foundation in these subjects, you will face significant challenges at METU. Applicants must know that studying at METU is challenging, the workload is heavy, and professors do not accept excuses. However, students who approach METU responsibly will leave with unforgettable memories, lasting friendships, and a broad worldview, becoming well-rounded students.
4. Getting into METU
Gaining admission to METU can be challenging. Admission is not based solely on exam results. For Azerbaijani citizens, at least the first part of the State Examination results must be submitted. The department responsible for admissions at METU is the International Students Office (ISO). It is a knowledgeable and friendly team. METU does not engage in student placement with companies under contract, so do not trust those who make promises in this regard. Based on our association's official request to the METU rectorate, the ISO will provide accurate information to help students make the right choices. To get accurate information, read the "Ways to Strengthen Your Application" section on their official website. You can also contact us via email or Instagram for more details.

8. English proficiency for the 2025-2026 Academic Year
As is known, the medium of instruction at METU is English. Students who do not provide sufficient English language proficiency certificates during the application process are required to take the METU English Proficiency Exam, which is usually held about 10 days before the beginning of the academic semester in September.
If you do not pass this exam or if your English level is not sufficient, METU offers you the opportunity to study in a one-year English Preparatory Program. If you are unsuccessful in the first year, you may be allowed to repeat the preparatory year.
Please note that these preparatory years are not counted towards the official duration of your undergraduate program.
However, if you submit one of the following recognized international language test scores and meet the required threshold, you may directly begin your undergraduate studies without attending the preparatory year.
